Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’

In a recent walk through the greenhouse I found this Shasta Daisy Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream‘ blooming. I took this picture in my hand so you can see how large these blooms are. I love the double row of petals on this bloom. The butter yellow color of ‘Banana Creme‘ make this different from the traditional Shasta Daisy. Blooming from summers beginning to summers end, ‘Banana Creme’ will add a beautiful splash of color all summer.  Take a different twist with your perennials, try planting them in a container as a thriller and adding annuals in as fillers and spillers. Prairie Pixies™ Cranberry Cupcake Echinacea

Well maybe not at first BITE but for sure at first SIGHT

For the past few years Echinacea have been all the rave. So many new varieties that come out every year, and us having to choose which ones to keep, drop or add as a new variety. Echinacea also have become a true collection. One of the new varieties that we added this year is Prairie Pixies™Cranberry Cupcake‘. One thing that I think people are looking for in cone flowers is a shorter plant but with large blooms. (correct me if I am wrong) ‘Cranberry Cupcake‘ is just that, a compact variety reaching 14 to 22 inches with tons of  huge blooms. The large, double pom pom cone is a bright pink color with lighter pink rays that fall from it. Just the name of this plant may lead you to also think  that it is a fragrant variety, which it definitely is! And with fragrance comes… you guessed it butterflies and hummingbirds. This delightful variety is a sure bet garden treat!

Agastache ‘Blue Boa’

If a long blooming perennial is what you are looking for, Agastache should be a high on your list.  Agastache ‘Blue Boa‘ is a beautiful new perennial variety that has bright purple flower spikes that bloom all summer. The tall (2 -3 foot) upright habit of ‘Blue Boa’ and thick colorful spikes make this a great specimen plant. What I have done and recommend doing is planting several Agastaches together in mass to create a colorful long blooming ‘patch’ in your garden. The sweet anise smell is delightful on a warm summer night. Take a few cuts and bring this beauty in the house to enjoy. Agastache ‘Blue Boa‘ is a natural attractor for hummingbirds and butterflies, and because of its lovely scent the deer will stay away.

Sweet Caroline Raven Ipomoea

There’s a new filler in town! Make ‘Sweet Caroline Raven‘ Sweet Potato Vine your go to plant for filling in your annual combinations. For many years the standard filler/spiller has always been Bacopa, Creeping Jenny, Licorice Vine, etc. , while these all make for a great filler, why not try some thing new and different?  ‘Sweet Caroline Raven‘ has gorgeous, lacy, black  leaves that can trail up to 3 foot if you let them. They intermingle well with Supertunias®, Superbells®, Geraniums and almost any other annual you can envision them with. The dark black foliage really makes other colors ‘pop’ from the contrast. Garden Crossings will be using tons of this Sweet Potato Vine in our baskets this year. Below are just a couple examples of combinations we will be using.

Color Flash® Lime Astilbe

Astilbe Color Flash Lime

Today when I was at The MSU Kent County extension office I saw this most amazing Astilbe. Astilbe Color Flash Lime was showing off! The multi colored foliage was super striking and caught me in my tracks. Astilbe are great for your part sun locations and prefer to be kept on the moist side. Color Flash Lime has amazing lime green foliage that turns colors of the sunset with a little sun exposure. The pale pink blooms are a beautiful contrast. Astilbe are a long blooming perennial with the added bonus of being deer and rabbit resistant.
